i did not know you could overmarinate chicken. i did not know that it would be such an effort to keep leftovers from going bad in the fridge. i did not know how to cook the simplest of things like pasta or mashed potatoes or hamburgers.
not all butter syrup can be frozen and then reheated. some doesn't freeze at all (still confused by that). and some, in the reheating process, separates. and tastes and looks like a bath of butter.
i did not know that every once in awhile freshen up a garburator with baking soda and vinegar. or that you can't put everything down a garburator. i didn't know that washing machines and dishwashers need cleaning cycles.
i did not know chicken needs to be cooked slowly. i did not know lightbulbs were so confusing to buy. i did not know how to make jam.
i did not know i would start acting and speaking like my mom so much. i did not know grocery shopping would feel so therapeutic. i did not know how to mend jeans.
it's a learning curve. and i'm grateful for it all.
and to be continued...
p.s.
my lack of kitchen knowledge is not a reflection on my mama’s teachings. she tried. but instead, at home i never prioritized kitchen skills. i enjoyed cleaning, organizing, and outdoor work, so that i did.
